Travel Bitten

“Fill your life with adventures, not things. Have stories to tell, not stuff to show.” Isn’t this a mesmerizing saying? Travelling has always been one of my passions. Travelling has an appeal of its own. Exploring new destinations, discovering unique cultures, trying out local food, and, celebrating life is a dream for many, but only a few achieve it. I know travelling requires money, and you know what – if that is your calling, then you can visit a new country every year by smart saving.

I have always travelled a lot. I have been to nearly 40-50 countries already, and, some I have been to more than 3-4 times. Yet, there are many countries to visit in my bucket list. I had a friend who would always tell me, “Why do you waste your money on travelling? You don’t get any monetary returns out of it.” Well, I had to laugh on that, because all he was seeing was monetary gains, but didn’t realize the experience one can gain which is one of the biggest assets of living. How? I will tell you…

I have been travelling from a very small age. Besides enjoying the foreign country, food, shopping, etc. I would also understand how developed that country is, or the standard of living of locals, or their local source of earning, etc. Which in turn would help me compare things in my country. I always got a lot of exposure from travelling which groomed me in a positive way.

These days the concept of travelling has changed. More often, it is to show off and post pictures on social media. People barely even know what places they saw on their holiday, but will not forget to post a swanky picture just to show others that they are abroad. Again, displaying that they are wealthy but not reconnoitering. My Dad would always make fun of such people, saying that most of the tourists are sleeping on the tour and when the tour guide announces that they have reached their next destination, everyone would abruptly wake up and search for their cameras or mobile phones without even knowing where they have reached. With the increasing trend of social media and to gain more followers, travel has been limited to only fancy pictures these days.

However, there is so much more to going on a holiday; Not just to a foreign country, but one can travel and explore places even within their own country. Since I live in India, there are so many beautiful places to go to which I still have to scout like Rajasthan, Leh-Ladakh, Arunachal Pradesh, etc. And I am looking forward to do so. Infact, many places where I can go with Junior too. Due to restrictions at the moment, I will resume travelling when things get back to normal.

Leaving aside the showing off aspect of travelling, there are wonderful reasons to go out. Like, to learn, have adventures, to be anonymous, because life is short, to meet new people, to take a break, to feel more alive, to know yourself, to challenge yourself, to experience new cultures, and the most important reason – to not look back and wonder, what if?

Each and every part of your body is rejuvenated once you go on a holiday. Post pictures, but not to show off, instead to show others how you restored your sanity, and, help others explore new places too. When overseas, you learn more about your own country, than you do the place you’re visiting. Travel while you are able; Don’t worry about the money, it can be earned again. Just make it work. Experience is far more valuable than money will ever be. If I was allowed to travel solo, I would have never been home. Junior and me would be just making memories.

Travelling is a very crucial part of life as it is the best way to get out of your busy schedule. Travelling is actually a good remedy for stress, anxiety and depression. But make sure, never travel with someone whom you don’t love. If you do not find company, go solo and meet new people out there with the same mindset as you. Travel takes you on a journey into new worlds that you would have never been exposed to. As you travel and discover these newly found worlds, take a moment to reflect not only on the differences that you observe in their lifestyle, and, behavior but on the things that unite us. This practice will not only broaden your mind, but will allow your authentic self to surface. And if you are looking to gain something more than just experience, you can even get great business ideas. I know of a couple to whom going on a holiday saved their marriage. It strengthened their relationship and ever since, they take atleast one domestic, and, one international trip every year.

Since I love travelling so much, I had also framed my career around it by being a travel consultant and helped people visit new countries with my personal experience. My travel business made me realize that majority of the people were only travelling to increase visa stamps on their passports, and, not for the true meaning of it. Sadly, that is the reality even today. I am only trying to bring awareness to the importance of travelling.

Travelling is food for the thought to our brain. It changes your perception towards life. It teaches you things that are beyond books. It gets you out of your comfort zone. Always remember, we travel not to escape life, but for life not to escape us. The Earth has music for those who can listen. So get out, and, explore the world. Live your life by a compass for once, not a clock.
